History of Auchtertool
Modern technology enables us to create this website for the community of today but Auchtertool is a village community going back many hundreds of years. There is a written record of Auchtertool Kirk in1127.
Many local names originate from Celtic times e.g.Dronagh - place of black thorns, Clentrie - sloping land.
Auchtertool - 900 years in the making
Throughout the centuries Auchtertool has been a rural community with people working the land. Locally grown barley was used when a brewery was opened in the village in the 1650s. The ale brewed was of such high quality that it was shipped straight to London to be sold there!
This trade continued until 1845 when the brewery was converted to a distillery and Auchtertool Whisky was created. It was in 1927 that the distillery was closed and the buildings used for malting and warehousing until 1973. Today the houses in The Maltings, built in the 1980s, replace the old distillery buildings.

History of Auchtertool
Auchtertool is a village rich in history and we have ambitious plans to publish as much of it as we can.

With the help of Auchtertool Community Trust and the dedication and generosity of the community we're in the process of digitising hours of footage showing what village life has been like over the ages.

We would love to hear from members of the community who have a story or artifact from Auchtertool that they would be happy to share.
